Telecommunications Technologies Certification: Connecting to the Future

The information explosion has caused the telecommunications industry to advance faster than any other field.  Cabling technicians are needed now, and will be far into the future, as fiber optic cable is being laid across America.  Eventually, it will run to every school, hospital, business and private residence.   

Earn your industry-recognized C-Tech Telecommunications Technologies Certification by completing 110 hours of specialized training which includes: Telecommunications: Technology Systems; Network Cabling: Copper-Based Systems; and Network Cabling: Fiber Optic-Based Systems.  Complete the course and receive a field toolkit to help you get started.

February 7

The Potter County Education Council will host a photography workshop by Curt Weinhold from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Coudersport office. Learn how to properly use your new or not so new digital camera at this class.  From exposing an image to loading it to the computer, students  will learn the basics in this two-hour course and the nomenclature used in the camera manual. Lens choices, memory cards and that oftentimes confusing menu system built into your camera. Curt  will explain how to set up your camera for several conditions, such as action (kids or sports), landscapes and close-ups.  Please take a camera and appropriate memory card.  Those attending are asked to have some familiarity with their  particular camera controls.  Cost is $35 per person.  To register, call 814-274-4877 or visit the website at www.pottercountyedcouncil.org.

The Potter County Animal Rescue Team will meet at 6:30 pm in the 9-1-1 building at Maple View, off of Route 872, Coudersport. February 8 - March 21

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Division of Continuing Education and Regional Development will hold a four-part Alzheimer’s disease series starting starting tonight in the Sixth-floor conference room of the Seneca Building at 2 main Street, Bradford  Jill L. Oliver, speech language pathologist at the Bradford manor, and Debbie McKee, director of activities at Sweden Valley Manor of Coudersport, will lead the sessions. population.  Each session takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m, and the cost is $15 per person for each session. Those who attend all four sessions can pay $50 for the series to save $10.  The first session, “Preparation for the Alzheimer’s Journey,” will be held Wednesday, Feb. 8. Oliver and McKee will look at challenges facing those with early stages of dementia. The instructors will also give advice on a daily routine and how to develop a strong support system. The instructors will also use American Medical Association statistics to trace the anatomical changes as the disease progresses.  The second session, “Empowerment for Success during the Early to Middle Stages of Dementia,” will take place on Wednesday, February 22. Oliver and McKee will explore strategies for coping with difficult behavior associated with Alzheimer’s. They will also discuss the anatomical changes that affect behaviors and communication.   The third session, “Exploring Home Care, Nursing Home Placement and the Special Care Unit,” will be held Wednesday, March 7. The instructors will cover finding a facility for a loved one. How to make visits more meaningful when visiting a person with dementia will also be discussed The fourth session, “Who Cares for the Caregiver?” will take place Wednesday, March 21. Oliver and McKee will discuss help for those who have been the support system. They will also cover how to cope after a loved one passes.

The Entrepreneurs Club Central will offer a workshop entitled, Getting the Most out of your Generation Y Workforce at the Clarion Hotel Dubois on Rich Highway from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The workshop is free of charge. There is a serious problem impacting the workplace, and it has nothing to do with downsizing, global competition or greed. Never before have leaders had such a stressful time understanding or motivating the younger people in the workforce to be productive. Why? The Potter County Education Council is offering a Machinist Fundamentals class at its Port Allegany location.  Machinists are highly skilled employees that use drawings, precision measuring tools, drilling machines, grinders, lathes, milling machines, and other specialized machines to shape and finish metal and nonmetal parts.  During this course, students will learn the fundamentals of shop safety; understanding drawings; taking precision measurements; doing layout work; using drilling machines, grinders, sawing and cutoff machines, lathes, and milling machines. This course is being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from5:30 – 8:30 p.m.  Cost is $380 per participant.  For more information or to register for this course, call (814) 545-1333 or check out the website at www.pottercountyedcouncil.org

The Bath VA Medical Center (VAMC) is holding “Veterans Economic Hardship and Homelessness Assistance Stand Downs” The morning event will be from 9:30 am to Noon at the Coudersport American Legion Post, located at 2 Buffalo Street in Coudersport.  The afternoon event will be from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm at the Westfield Community Center, located at 429 East Main Street in Westfield.Veterans who are facing severe economic hardship, housing issues or need help accessing health care are encouraged to attend.  In addition, personal hygiene supplies, military surplus (blankets, boots, coats, sleeping bags) and other give away items will be distributed to Veterans facing severe economic hardship, while supplies last. For more information, contact the Bath VA Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Office at 607-664-4319.  Veterans not currently enrolled should take their DD214 and 2011 income information to the event in order to determine eligibility for care.

February 17-19

 The first annual “Potter County Vintage Snow Fest” will be held at the snowmobile club on North Hollow Road in Coudersport. (Postponed from January 13-15 and February 3-5).  The weekend will feature all things vintage, including Vintage Sled Displays and a Vintage Ride on Sunday. The highlight of the weekend will be Saturday’s competitive snow track races around the club’s quarter mile oval snow-track.  Snowmobiles built in 1983 or earlier are considered vintage.  There will be 16 race classes, including a “mini” class for children ages 5 to 10 years old.  Entry is $25 per snowmobile.  For those enthusiasts who own vintage snowmobiles, but do not wish to race them, there will be an opportunity to display them under a full tent, out of the elements.  Join other collectors and enthusiasts in the display tent, most who have restored or maintained their vintage snowmobiles by hand.  There is a cost of $5 for display snowmobiles to help cover the cost of the tent. Friday evening, the event kicks off with a groomed trail ride at 7:00 pm and hot dogs at the club after the ride.  All riders and sleds are welcome to take a night ride on freshly groomed trails, then enjoy a friendly get together back at the club, where club members will serve hot dogs and beverages for $5.  There will also be pre-registration for Saturday’s race from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. The weekend will be capped off with a vintage trail ride on Sunday morning, February 19.  The ride will leave from the clubhouse.  There is no charge to ride.  The club’s kitchen will be open all weekend serving up hot food and beverages.  Details are still being determined, so please visit the club website for details.

The Potter County Ed Council will hold a Winter Nature Photography Workshop at Sinnemahoning State Park’s new Visitor Center. from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Those attending will learn how to expose and compose for wall hanging photographs.  The first hour will be “tech talk” indoors followed by a field trip to nearby locations. After returning inside, a discussion and critique will follow. Those attending should take proper winter clothing, including gloves and boots. Plan ahead for variable weather; Lunch and water bottle for a half-hour lunch break; Camera with memory card.  Please be familiar with your camera and settings.  Optional: Tripod, polarizing filter.  The cost is $70 per person.  To register, call 814-545-1333 or visit our website at www.pottercountyedcouncil.org.

The Friends of Lyman Run will be sponsoring a day of family oriented winter activities today. NICE ON THE ICE will begin at 10:00 am and run until 2:00 pm.  An introduction to the sport of ice-fishing will be explained in two clinics with PA Fish and Boat personnel  and Friends volunteers– times to be announced.  There will also be several “Learn to Snowshoe” classes and the Downhill Sledding area will be open.  Equipment for both the ice-fishing clinics and the snowshoe lessons will be provided. A fishing license is not required for participating in the clinics, but anyone who continues to fish and wants to keep the fish they catch -  must have a fishing license.  Sledders should take  their own saucers, toboggans and sleds.  The park does have a few sleds available and they will be at the hill.  The Friends group will also be serving up hot dogs, chili, hot chocolate, coffee and cider.  There is no fee for any of the programs, just the food…and the funds will be used to put electric in the park’s Schott Pavilion and also to the relocated program amphitheater. 

The Friends of Lyman Run is a chapter of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation, a non-profit group of volunteers who work with their local state Parks and Forests assisting with the stewardship of their natural resources and also volunteering with programs and projects.   This year has been declared “the Year of Living Playfully” and what greater way to come out and play than at your local state park?  Bundle up the family and join us for some winter-time fun!

Clarion University’s Small Business Development Center will offer a workshop entitled QuickBooks 2011 Advanced and Payroll at the center on North Point Drive in Clarion from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Registration is at 12:30 pm. Participants will Learn how to manage users, files, and data. Discover the time-saving features of the payroll module. Gain knowledge on year-end reporting and prepare for filing taxes. Discover many tricks and tools that will make your QuickBooks more efficient and user-friendly. This is a hands-on computer training where each registered attendee will have use of a computer. This will be a one-day three hour seminar to include training on the following topics:

Clarion University’s Small Business Development Center will offer workshop entitled Utilizing Social Networking for Small Businesses from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the center in on North Point Drive in Clarion. Registration is at 5:30 pm. The workshop will provide an advanced hands-on opportunity to learn more techniques for using Facebook as a social networking marketing tool in your business. Learn how to upload pictures and videos, organize and tag them; how to use groups for team collaboration; and using Facebook mobile to update your page.
Heather Mohnkern will cover subscribing to feeds and the advantage to your customers, reviewing privacy threats and ways of controlling access to your account by multiple administrators. Review marketing techniques to get your Facebook page to be viewed more and learn about badges for your website. Cost is $20.

The Potter County Ed Council is offering a Medical Administrative Assistant Program in Coudersport.This 50-hour course prepares students to function effectively in many of the administrative and clerical positions in the health care industry.  Medical administrative assistant, medical secretary and medical records clerk are all positions in great demand.  The program covers important background information on medical terminology, insurance billing and coding, medical ethics, customer service and legal aspects.  The program is intended to provide students with a well-rounded introduction to medical administration so that a student can gain the necessary skills required to obtain a medical administration position in the health care field.   This course is being held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Coudersport office of PCEC.  Cost is $999 per person and includes all program materials.  To register, call 800-872-1787 or email contined@pitt.edu
