Normally we don’t encourage government spending but the Coudersport Swimming Pool is an example of a situation where we believe government should step in. At the December 18, Borough Council meeting, the chairman of the recreation committee asked Council to seriously consider expressing their opinions about closing the pool this coming summer due to the costs associated with the operation of the pool.  For many years, the pool has been viewed by area parents as a safe “babysitter” on a summer afternoon. Thousands of children have been taught how to swim at pool and it’s been a summer employment opportunity for many. In this day and age of video and online games,  24 hour television, and childhood obesity on the rise, the healthy activity of supervised swimming is even more important than it was 20 years ago when neighborhood baseball games and bike riding were more common. While the pool has been used by many adults as well as children,  if Coudersport Borough Council decides to close the town pool, it will be neglecting a key responsibility to the town’s future citizens. The Borough Council is expected to consider the pool’s future at the January 21 meeting. We hope the council will see the necessity of keeping the pool open.
