Thursday’s
high: 30, Overnight low: 18 no precipitation prior to 7:00 a.m.
We apologize for the delay in posting today’s news but
conditions changed so rapidly throughout the morning we were
kept busy making the changes on Black Forest Broadcasting.
Slight
Break Before Another Storm
A winter storm warning remains in effect for our entire
service area until 6:00 p.m. today. Snow began falling on
Fishing Creek at about 7:30 this morning and by the noon hour
some 4-1/2 inches had accumulated. Several area schools
dismissed students earlier than the had planned on the last day
before Christmas vacation and Northern Potter cancelled classes
all day as a precaution. The worst of today’s storm may have
passed but the Potter County EMA is expressing concern about
another storm which is expected to arrive Saturday night after a
brief reprieve. That snow will be drier and the real danger
will be strong winds that will move in afterwards. Blowing snow
and drifting will be the main problems with power outages
becoming a real possibility.
Wind
Turbine Ordinance Approved by Split Vote
After months of study, research, discussion and
controversy, the Potter County Commissioners yesterday approved
the proposed wind ordinance by a 2-1 margin. Chairman Doug
Morley and Paul Heimel voted in favor of the measure while Susan
Kefover voted against it, saying she preferred a less
restrictive ordinance suggesting that the state’s model
ordinance would have been a better alternative. Heimel said a
provision in the ordinance which lets each community resolve
neighborhood issues concerning turbines, made the measure
workable. But Bob White, representing AES, the company building
turbines across the Twin Tiers, said the provision is not
“defensible” in court cases. Ulysses Township farmer Jim Hoopes
who has interests in wind energy, agreed with Commissioner
Kefover that the ordinance is too restrictive and would lead to
stronger regulations for all other businesses. Several other
residents addressed the commissioners before the vote.
Police
Ask Help Investigating Crash Early Today
Coudersport-based state police asking that anyone who has
information about a one-vehicle crash at about 5:00 a.m. this
morning on the Peet Brook Road in Allegany Township. Troopers
said 28 year old Crystal Taylor of North Main Street Coudersport
suffered severe injuries when she was ejected from her Pontiac
Sunfire as it rolled over several times down a large embankment.
Taylor was headed south when the compact zig-zagged across the
road, went off the west side of the highway and over-turned
several times before coming to rest 25 feet off the west side of
the road. Anyone with information is asked to call the barracks
at 274-8690.
Attempted
Identity Theft Investigated
Troopers are also continuing their investigation into an
attempted identity-theft taking place in mid-August. Authorities
say someone tried to use a credit card belonging to Sherry
Kalasnik of Ulysses to buy more than $941 worth of items from
Overstock.com. State police say they delayed releasing news
about the incident so as not to jeopardize their investigative
efforts.
